The Wylie East High School (WEHS) Solar Car Team is a nationally recognized student engineering program dedicated to innovation excellence. Our team has transformed into a formidable presence in the Solar Car Challenge consistently achieving top finishes and national championships in our division.
Our mission is to provide students with a hands-on learning experience in engineering and energy through the design, construction, and racing of solar-powered vehicles. We strive to foster teamwork, problem-solving skills, and a passion for STEM, empowering the next generation of engineers and innovators.
Our Story
This program provides a hands learning experience where students design, build, and race roadworthy solar-powered vehicles, affectionately known the "East Beast." After years consistent second-place finishes, the team broke this "curse" in 2024, emerging as a powerhouse with back-back national championships. Supported by dedicated advisors like Matthew Karlsen and committed mentors, the team emphasizes problem-solving, engineering skills, and teamwork, while also involving significant fundraising efforts to drive success in future STEM careers.
Some notable achievements include being back-to-back national champions in the Advanced Classic Division of the Solar Car Challenge in both 2024 and 2025. In 2024 challenge, the team also achieved remarkable milestones that showcased their engineering prowess and dedication.
